Windshield Chip vs. Crack: When Can It Be Repaired vs. Replaced?

You're driving through Summit County and — ping — a rock kicks up from the road and hits your windshield. It happens to just about everyone who drives in the Colorado mountains. The first question most people ask is: do I need a full replacement, or can it just be repaired?

The good news is that many chips and small cracks can be repaired quickly and affordably. The key is knowing the difference — and acting fast before a small problem becomes a big one.

What's the Difference Between a Chip and a Crack?

A chip is a small piece of glass that has broken out of your windshield — usually caused by a rock or road debris. Common types include bullseyes, star breaks, and combination breaks. They're typically smaller than a quarter.

A crack is a line in the glass that can range from a small stress fracture to a crack that runs the full width of the windshield. Cracks can spread quickly, especially with Colorado's temperature swings between cold mornings and warm afternoons.

Can It Be Repaired?

In many cases, yes! Here are the general guidelines:

Repair is usually possible if:

  • The chip is smaller than a quarter
  • The crack is less than 6 inches long
  • The damage is not in the driver's direct line of vision
  • The damage has not reached the edges of the windshield
  • The inner layer of glass is not compromised

Replacement is typically needed if:

  • The crack is longer than 6 inches
  • There are multiple chips or cracks
  • The damage is in the driver's line of sight
  • The crack has reached the edge of the windshield (these spread fast)
  • The damage has penetrated through both layers of glass

Why Does It Matter Where the Damage Is?

Your windshield is a safety component — not just a piece of glass. It supports your roof, helps deploy your airbags correctly, and on newer vehicles houses cameras and sensors for ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) like lane departure warning and adaptive cruise control. Damage in the wrong spot — even if small — can compromise how well those systems work.

Don't Wait — Colorado Temperatures Make Cracks Spread Fast

This is especially important in Summit and Eagle County. The freeze-thaw cycle in the mountains is brutal on glass. A small chip on Monday morning can turn into a full crack by Friday if cold nights and warm sunny days keep expanding and contracting the glass. The sooner you get it looked at, the more likely it can be repaired rather than replaced — saving you time and money.

What About Insurance?

Many comprehensive auto insurance policies cover windshield repair with no deductible — meaning a chip repair could cost you nothing out of pocket. Even full replacements are often covered minus your deductible. Crystal Clear works with all major insurance companies and can bill most of them directly, so the process is easy.
